As you play, you unlock a variety of different ships each with its own unique weaponry and play style which offers a different way to play the game. There are also 10 challenging achievements to attempt, and online scores for each ship.
Trivia
-
Irukandji is named after a type of highly venomous jellyfish. I’m pretty certain Brandon of Nyarlu labs came up with the name, though at the time of writing his website seem to not work :(
-
Irukandji, along with other cool contemporary games was show at the Start Show in Canada. I didn’t get the chance to to sadly. I’m certain there was a picture of it on display, though i can’t seem to find it.
-
Irukandji was reviewed in Retro Gamer magazine, alongside a brief, rather nonchalantly answered interview.
-
Irukandji was featured in the book “250 Indie Games You Must Play”, by Mike Rose of nomorerobots fame.
-
The characters in Irukandji are all animated procedurally, which gives them the smooth, natural motions the have. I was largely inspired by the BBC documentary series Blue Planet, specifically the episode about the deep ocean. The creatures there are so alien looking and almost unlikely that i wanted to make some of my own to go with them.
